Thursday August 5th - 11:30AM
About 50 open end funds, mainly smaller funds, were missing from last night's
closing price download. Also, their prices are not available though Yahoo or
NASDAQ this morning. These included some funds from Direxion, Kinetic, First
American, Buffalo, Hatteras, Leuthold, Intrepid, Jacob, Vice, Alpine, and
others.
For most of these last night, we sent evaluated prices. This morning we began
hand gathering. Some corrections made it into the morning server reboot and can
be corrected now by doing another FTComm Update. The remainder will be worked
and we will put up a second set of changes. These will be available after 3:00PM
Eastern time through another FTComm Update.
While missing prices are common, it is rare that so many families are involved.
Most mornings we have to call 1-3 companies to gather several fund prices from
each. Today it is more like 12-15 companies some with only one fund.
We appreciate your patience.

weekend. The changes affected all kinds of funds, ETFs, and stocks. Historical
and current changes were made. This combined with end of month dividends will
produce a substantial number of which will automatically be sent to all users

To put this into perspective, we changed 0.0002% our prices with the

There is a problem originating with the NYSE which has delayed fund and index

We experienced server problems over the weekend. The
problem was due to inadequate testing and supervision of software code
changes on Friday. I regret the problem, and take full responsibility
for the issues.
Since last November most FastTrackers have noticed 2-3
times when they have been unable to get updates. It has not been a big
problem, but, for me, failure rate has been, and still is, unacceptable.

The redundant systems are fully functional tonight. There should be no

Our servers have been erratic this evening. Our AT&T connection is down,
likely a hardware failure in the T1 router. This will be fixed by update
time tomorrow with an overnight delivery of a new AT&T device.
The GoDaddy Arizona-based server is experiencing intermittent failures
due to software problems in new server code. This is our programming
failure.
Our redundancy has failed us tonight. The last time was during
hurricane Gustave when we were not able to connect to the Arizona server by
internet nor to an employee evacuated to the San Antonio via phone due to service outages
throughout the Baton Rouge area.
We regret the inconvenience and are monitoring the situation closely
through 1:00 AM Friday morning. The service will be restarted at 6:00AM if
it fails overnight.

- Our original comments about today's delay, and other recent delays, have
been
inadequate. The data group met today to assure that we post better status information.
- Last night we reran the downloads from the exchanges as 1600 fund prices
did not pass our quality checks. This delayed the download about 20 minutes from our target of
7:10PM Central.
- The second download was imperfect as well, but better. We posted it at
7:32PM.
- There have been three issues though the holiday season and including the
11th's delay that have caused data download delays.
- Holiday delays: The fund companies (and their agents) do not
complete their in house processing deadlines and fail to provide prices
to NASDAQ. We suspect many employees leave their offices early or take
vacation during the holidays. Here at FastTrack, we do not schedule
vacation time during the end of year holidays.
- A change in NASDAQ requirements: They now allow funds a second
deadline up to 8:00PM Central to report prices . . . this is too late to
make our evening processing requirements. Fortunately, on most evenings,
most funds still keep to the 6:00PM deadline. Late prices are corrected
the next morning from an overnight NASDAQ feed and hand-correction of
remaining issues.
- End of Year Dividends: Dividends are reported on a closing price
basis . . . so the price has to be right. This causes funds to miss
NASDAQ deadlines. In a few cases, the data (this year Rydex data) has to
be collected by hand over the phone. A few funds did not report prices
for three days at the end of the year.

We get the same downloads as
most providers, for example, Yahoo. As you can see, the ICLLX
for last night is in error in the list of prices at the
bottom-right-center. 11.29 was the price fed data providers last
night. At the top right, Yahoo provides the corrected "real-time" price of
10.64. This matches the price you will get from us in the morning
Data Update.
Over the years there have been major consolidations in ranks of
data providers. We use Interactive Data Corp, the giant of the
industry, who has over the years absorbed a number of other data
vendor. |

Also this morning the 12th, the NASDAQ site (the original
collection source of all mutual fund
prices) shows a major problem in the ICLLX prices
showing last night at more than 10 x the correct price. Also, the
chart is missing adjustment for the 12/17/09 dividend. In Summary
Price quality is important: 60% of FT revenue goes to the
preparation of data from the best available sources and the hand
work we must do in-house for further correction.
- We call the fund companies directly and get corrections when
needed.
- We also subscribe to institutional services that provide
some, but not all, corrections.
It is surprising that, over the 20-years we have been in
business, that, other than FastTrack, quality mutual fund prices
remain elusive. |
